Obituary of Floyd R. Newcomer

Floyd R. (Dick) Newcomer, 86, of Vowinckel, formerly of Oil City, passed away Thursday evening, January 14, 2016, at Brookville Hospital, after an extended illness. Born August 12, 1929 in Calumet, Westmoreland County, he was the son of the late Earl D. and Helen R. Baker Newcomer. He married the former Vivian C. Zewe on May 14, 1958 at Pleasant Unity Methodist Church and she preceded him in death on November 20, 2013. Mr. Newcomer graduated from Hurst High School in Norvelt, PA in 1947. From 1947 – 1970 he worked for A & P grocery stores. From 1970 – 1972 he worked for Pritts Feed Mills. In 1972 he returned to A & P and continued there until 1977. He then worked for Shop and Save grocery store in Indiana, PA. from 1977 – 1984. From 1985 until 2003, he was the owner/manager of Giant Eagle in Oil City. Mr. Newcomer was a life member of the Free Masons, Westmoreland Lodge Number 518. He received the Oil City Outstanding Citizen Award in 1996 and served on the Board of Directors for Salvation Army in Oil City. Floyd is survived by two sons: Bryan F. Newcomer of Vowinckel and Bradley R. Newcomer and his wife, Karen of Harrisonburg, VA. He is survived by one granddaughter, Leanne Newcomer of Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama. In addition he is survived by 5 nieces: Suzanne Ansell and her husband, Benjamin of Mt. Pleasant; Sandy Eckenrode and her husband, Richard of Patton, PA; Cathy Jinks and her husband, Andrew of North Huntingdon, PA; Phyllis Schemmel and her husband, Kenneth of Springfield, OH and Becky Perperas and her husband, Nicholas of Bridgeport, WV. He is also survived by 6 great nieces and 6 great nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Newcomer was preceded in death by 3 sisters: Eleanor Andrews, Jean Pritts and Margaret Topper and one brother, Earl William Newcomer. A graveside memorial service will be held for family and friends at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at the Westmoreland County Memorial Park in West Hempfield. Rev. Olivia Graham from the First United Methodist Church of Greensburg will officiate. Interment will follow in the cemetery.
