Learned of Uncle Wes' passing late last night. So sorry that I could not attend funeral service. My sympathies go out to my family. I have very fond memories of Uncle Wes as a child & later in life when he use to come visit my mom. I know he must be happy to be reunited with Aunt Jean as I know he missed her terribly. In the movie, Forest Gump, there is a scene where the young Forest Gump goes to his first day of school and when he gets on the bus he tells the driver that he is not allowed to talk to strangers. The driver introduces herself and Forest Gump says, “now we are not strangers any more.”
Thirty-nine years ago I came to the Hollis house and after my very first visit I was treated not as a stranger dating their daughter, but as a welcome guest. During my first year as part of this family I saw this scene repeated many times. It did not matter why you were there, they fed you, talked to you, listened to you, and repaired your car if it needed it.
Over the years as I came to know Wes Hollis better, I discovered a person unlike no other I had ever met.
He never drank, never smoked, never lost his temper…. even the time when, after repairing my vehicle for three days and we were putting it back together, I stabbed the radiator with a screwdriver.
In 39 years I heard him curse only one time…. when I kicked a 5 gallon bucket of tar over on the roof.
He became not just my father-in-law, but my hunting partner, my firewood helper and my friend.
I will miss him very, very much.
